It has been an inspiring week for the School of Law, with two distinguished alumni appearing on UTV Live on consecutive evenings. Their contributions showcased not only their legal expertise but also the broader professional skills - media communication, public engagement, and advocacy - that are increasingly vital in modern legal careers.
Kevin Winters - UTV Live TV broadcast, 3 December 2025
Alumnus Kevin Winters, one of Northern Ireland’s leading public and administrative law specialists, appeared on UTV Live to discuss the Police Ombudsman’s judgment on the Weapons and Explosives Research Centre, part of the former RUC Special Branch. He addressed findings linked to the testing of weapons and their subsequent return to paramilitary groups, an issue of public concern.
Kevin has been listed by Chambers and Partners for over 20 years, receiving a Band 1 ranking this year as “a leading expert on public law matters … with particular expertise in public law and coronial law.” As the founder of KRW LAW, he remains a prominent voice in conflict-related and human rights litigation. His appearance highlights the importance of clear and informed public communication in high-profile legal work.
Enda McGarrity – UTV Live TV broadcast, 4 December 2025
The following evening, alumnus Enda McGarrity, Director at P.A. Duffy & Co., featured on UTV Live discussing the pre-inquest hearing into the death of Erin Harbinson. The case centres on failed cervical screenings conducted within the Southern Health Trust, which led to a significant review. Enda noted on air that he hopes the inquest process will finally allow Erin's voice to be heard.
Enda leads P.A. Duffy's Human Rights and Public Law department, working on Public Inquiries, Inquests, Judicial Review, wrongful death claims, and environmental litigation. His media appearance demonstrates how legal practitioners must interpret complex legal issues while also communicating effectively with the public.
Celebrating Our Alumni
As a School, we are immensely proud to see our graduates contributing so confidently and constructively on public platforms. The achievements of Kevin and Enda reflect not only their professional dedication but also the strong foundations built during their study of law at Queen’s University. Their work demonstrates to current students that rigorous legal training, combined with curiosity, public engagement, and integrity, can lead to meaningful and influential careers.
